Wall bed guide: folding direction, size, dimensions & assembly

A wall bed (also called a fold-down bed or Murphy bed) turns any room from a living space into a bedroom in seconds: during the day the bed, bedding and all, disappears vertically or horizontally into a cabinet carcass on the wall; at night you fold it down in a few simple moves. In this guide we explain the key decisions – folding direction, size, configuration, mattress and space requirements – using the official dimensions of the SMARTBett models we offer as an official sales partner.

Vertical or horizontal – which folding direction suits you?

Vertical wall beds (M1, M3) fold down lengthways – the head end sits against the wall. They need a ceiling height of around 221–226 cm and are the classic choice for ordinary living spaces. Horizontal wall beds (M2) fold down sideways and, depending on size, need only 128–189 cm of height – ideal for sloping ceilings, low ceilings or when the bed is to sit beneath a window.

With sofa, corner sofa or desk?

• With sofa: A proper couch by day, a bed by night. The seat cushions stay in place when you fold the bed down – only the back and lumbar cushions are briefly set aside. Available with narrow (11 cm) or wide (26 cm) armrests, and with drawers or storage for bed linen on request.
• With corner sofa: L-shaped seating with more seating space – needs correspondingly more wall width (see table).
• With table (M3): Integrated desk that stays in place when the bed is folded down – the solution for a home office and guest room in one room.
• On its own: The wall bed on its own is the slimmest and most affordable design, with the widest choice of colours and sizes.

Mattress and slatted base

• A permanently fitted slatted base is included in the delivery; click-in straps hold the mattress securely in place when the bed is folded up.
• The mattress is not included – you can use your existing one (mind the height!) or order a suitable one from us at the same time.
• Maximum mattress height: approx. 20–22 cm depending on the model (M3: max. 22 cm; the exact recommendation is given on each product page).
• The load capacity is up to 400 kg depending on the model.

Delivery, assembly and payment

• Free freight delivery within Germany (excluding islands); the delivery date is arranged with you personally.
• Delivery time: usually 20–30 days (M1 models: 20–50 days) – every bed is made to order.
• Professional assembly available as an option: from €654.95 (lightweight wall) or €674.95 (solid wall), €799.95 for models with sofa – including installation by our assembly team throughout Germany (excluding islands).
• Instalment payments available via Klarna and PayPal.
• 14-day right of withdrawal as provided by law.
